Ceramic Barbecue Grills: The Big Green Egg Smoker Vs. Other Barbecue Grills

If you love to grill, you've most likely heard of the Big Green Egg grill. It is a ceramic grill which can be used as a barbeque grill, smoker or even an outdoor oven. It's so versatile you are able to cook everything from hamburgers and steaks and other traditional bbq grill foods to desserts, bread and even pizza.

Eggheads can't live without the Big Green Egg, but you might be asking yourself what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) different from other barbeque grills.

Probably the largest distinction is the appearance. The Big Green Egg smoker is well, green and the same shape as a big egg. While I can't say why it is green, I can point out that the egg shape appeared to be designed (on purpose) to provide the ability to control and retain the heat in the bbq grill better than other grills.

The second biggest difference is the material. Instead of being constructed with metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is substantially more long lasting than other materials, meaning the Egg will last longer than other grills and smokers, it can be cooked on year long (even with very cold temperatures). It is also safer than other grills, especially if there are young children running around, because the ceramic material stays much cooler than regular metal bbq grills and because you always cook with the lid down, so you don't have to worry about flare-ups.

There are many other differences however one of my favorite features would be the following the Big Green Egg has. You will discover Egg fans and gatherings throughout the United States, and Eggheads are always eager to share their stories, helpful hints as well as recipes at gatherings as well as on the Egghead forum. I can't think of any other grill that has this kind of following.

I will admit, the Egg does have a few negatives when compared to other bbq grills. For instance, it's not a cheap grill. You could pay approximately $700 for the large Big Green Egg. Also, you should use lump wood charcoal, which isn't always easy to find and can be quite a bit more expensive when compared with traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller grilling area than many gas grills, meaning you'll need a backup grill if you are entertaining a number of people.

Having said that, the versatility of the Big Green Egg grill, the ability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, and the awesome results you get (the Egg is quite forgiving, even for novice cooks) are worth the cost. If you're a barbeque enthusiast and you do a lot of smoking in addition to barbecuing you will really enjoy the quality and the results you will get with the Big Green Egg.
